Well-calibrated ones do make life easier.

yes they’re handy for squeezing out every inch during parallel parking

100% yes! Especially with visibility in new cars being limited

Or you could just get steel bumpers

I appreciate them in rental cars, but I could take or leave them in my own... after a few weeks of driving I know exactly where my bumpers are.
Also you are right they need to be calibrated! I drove a suburban a few years ago that screamed bloody murder when it was stil a good foot and a half from a wall.

Backup cameras, good.
Squealing pieces of shit that blow your eardrums out when you aren’t even close to parked, bad.

Right? The rear visibility on this car is far from the worst, but it’s definitely not good.

Parking by brail. That’s how my grandfather does it.

True enough. The car pictured above isn’t mine, and it has poor rear visibility, so they helped. This is what I do when left to my own devices in my very long car with very good rear visibility.
(That no parking sign is until 4pm, this was in the evening)

I’ve had my Dart for a year and still don’t know where the back ends. I can’t see it like in my old Sentra.

Yeah I cant see the trunk of my car in the rear view to have the slightest idea of where it ends. The camera and sensors are awesome. And the rear cross path detection is great to, if a little sensitive but it’s picked up humans and cars long before I would have seen them backing out of spaces with large SUVs on either side.

Ha, mine is actually my dads too, I just drive it more than him. I do not have a car now and drive the x3 or my moms z4. Is it a 35i?

True, I’d take a camera over a parking sensor every day or if it comes with both, the option of turning the sensors off.

I love having a backup camera for the sheer fact that it takes the guesswork out of parking as close as I can when space is tight (i.e. randomly short parking spaces around here that make my car feel like a damn limo).

Yeah visibility is some newer cars really does suck. My wife’s Outback is a pain to see out of and also has a huge turning circle. We’ve pretty much figured it out but she still reminds me from time to time that we skipped the option package that had he backup camera.

Give me a backup camera instead of the sensors please. For the front all I need are a pair of working headlights, no matter the time of day.

Cameras that actually help are useful. Most “backup cameras” just blankly look behind the car vaguely and give no assistance in parking because there is no depth perception. But the better ones are aimed at the bumper and allow you to park accurately within inches because you can see the gap directly. I set this up in my previous car (Honda civic) just for fun with a webcam and a computer. I was able to use it once on a really extreme parallel parking spot where there was inches to spare on either side. Those sensors are STUPID though. Friggin things always sound like a patient dying in a hospital and it flatlines with like 3 to 4 feet of distance left.

I like the Mercedes ones that have 360 degree parking sensors and a heat map to go along with it. Even seen a top-down, GTA 1 style camera setup with those too! That one is fun in a tight parking lot where its going off like a video game with little pings in all directions and the heat map is flashing colors all over the place.

The above BMW has the 36o sensors and the top-down camera as well.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

I would love to have such a system on my Mazda5. With its tiny slit for a rear window I tend to leave wayyyyy to much room, thinking I’m practically on top of the car behind me.
I purchased a license plate frame with camera, and now I just need to figure out something to use as a display. After having a window smashed and my GPS stolen, I’m afraid to leave something in there that a thief will want to take, and also don’t want to be bothered with removing the monitor after every drive.

Yes!
I originally hated backup cameras, for whatever reason.....
Then I actually got a car with a backup camera and it’s great. Mine doesn’t beep and generally shriek at my though, which is a good thing.
